I came a cross a query some one wants to know what is MIC and does it a "'Consumer Association".Even, some political advocate refer MIC as 'Malaysian Indian Curse'. This invites me to share my thoughts and opinion on MIC and its role in Malaysian politics.
Malaysian Indian Congress ( MIC) is the political party founded in year 1946 and fought for the Independence of Malaya together with UMNO and MCA. MIC is the only party represents the Indian community to draft the Constitution, which was the basis and legal framework for Malaya to achieve Independence in year 1957 and subsequently become the supreme law of this country.
MIC is the party, representing the Indians fought for the citizenship rights of Indians and nearly 2 million non- malays, including Indians , become citizens of this country over night. The Islamic party,PAS, and many other Islamic and extremist parties, worked against the idea of giving citizenship to non-Malays and put up a political struggle, including agitating the Malay community to refuse the citizenship proposal and enjoin Malaya with Indonesia to become one big "Malaya Raya (a Malay dominant region) .
Tunku Abdul Rahman , as the head of UMNO who represent the majority of the Malay community then, never entertained demands and suggestion put by PAS and the ultra Malay parties but went ahead with his proposal of opening Malaya to non-Malays. Tunku proposed an idea that 'Malays can work with Indians and Chinese as one big family'.
After Independence, MIC fought for Tamil schools, Hindu Temples to remain and flourish in this country. MIC fought for the social-economic rights and development of the Indian community. Today, we see 80% of the Indian community moved out from the rural background to urban setting and the average Indian family's income has increased tremendously from RM 475 in year 1970 to RM 4000 in year 2010.
But, it is unfortunate , in the past, MIC faces a lot of challenges including leadership crisis within the party, less support from the community, many educated Indians ridiculed MIC as Tamilan party and shun away and now some young Indians claim that MIC is irrelevant. Disunity among Indians has crippled Indians political strength in the past. Indians should unite, regardless of their origin and background, in the future to sustain our legitimate rights in this benevolent country.
Nevertheless, I am confident, the present MIC leadership under Dato G.Palanivel, is capable of bringing Indian community to a better future by working closely with PM Najib who cares for Indians.Indians future is to work within the system founded by our fore fathers. Have NAMBIKAI that PM Najib Tun Razak and Dato G.Palanivel's leadership will ensure a bright future for Indians of today and tomorrow.
